Bertazzoni Ranges
THE BERTAZZONI HISTORY
The family firm that makes the new Bertazzoni Professional Series of range stoves was founded more than 120 years ago in 1882. Their remarkable story is linked to their home town of Guastalla, 90 miles southeast of Milan, as well as the early influences of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the upheavals two World Wars.

The Bertazzoni name first became well known in Italy as a producer of fine wood-burning cooking stoves early in the last century. But the story of the family’s remarkable enterprise and engineering began even earlier – in the 19th century, during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
It was then that Francesco Bertazzoni, founder of the dynasty, started to make weighing machines for dairies, offices and pharmacies around his home town of Guastalla.
Guastalla lies north east of Parma on the River Po in the region Emilia-Romagna. The building of the Parma-Suzzara railroad connected it with the industrial centers of the north and eastwards into the heart of the Empire. And so it was by rail that wood-burning cooking stoves first arrived here from Austria, brought by Austrian trainmen.
Then as now, Emilia-Romagna was the heartland of Italian food, and these wood-burning stoves set Francesco to thinking. He was in no hurry however, and it was some years later towards the end of the century before he and his son Antonio decided to make their own cooking stoves – just for local use to begin with, and in very small quantities.

In 1709, the original Coalbrookdale Company was formed by the great iron master, Abraham Darby. Early products included items such as cooking pots and the foundry produced and laid cast iron rails in 1767 becaming the first company to make iron wheels and rails for the railroad industry. However, it is the casting and building of the iron bridge over the River Severn in 1779 which is recognized as the most prominent achievement of the Coalbrookdale Company.
By the mid 1930s another dimension to iron casting was introduced by Francis Darby. Francis had a great love of art and under his guidance, the foundry started to produce ornamental castings including tables and garden furniture as well as larger projects such as the "Hyde Park" gates and railings.

In 1929, the Coalbrookdale Company became a subsidiary of Allied Ironfounders Limited and continued to produce the castings for a wide variety of products including domestic heating and cooking appliances such as the Aga. Today, the foundry continues to manufacture these quality, cast iron cooking instruments.
The Process The foundry in Coalbrookdale is responsible for producing all the castings forAga and every product reflects the heritage and traditional craftsmanship thatsets Aga apart. The complete process of casting and enameling takes place attwo sites - the Coalbrookdale foundry and the Aga factory in Ketley, six milesaway.
Casting The raw materials used at Coalbrookdale are scrap iron and pig iron which aremelted down at temperatures of 3,272 DEG F. Before it has a chance to cool down,the molten metal is poured into moulds. The castings are then removed from themolds and left to cool. The castings are then shot blasted and moved to the dressingdepartment where rough edges are removed. The castings are then transported tothe Aga-Rayburn site at Ketley where they are then annealed and blasted withiron shot at 72lb a square inch before being filed by hand. This prepares thecastings for the enameling process.
Enameling Aga cookers have a vitreous enamel surface because it is long-lasting, scratch resistant and the color doesn`t fade. Vitreous enamel is a mixture of molten glass, clay and pigment that is permanently bonded onto cast iron at very high temperatures to form a tough, gloss finish. All the colors are produced from metal oxides and the entire enameling process is done by hand. The whole procedure takes three days.
At the start of the enameling process, an undercoat is sprayed onto the castings and the castings are then put into a large oven at 1,445 DEG F for 40 minutes. A further two layers of enamel are then sprayed onto the castings and then fired at 1,427 DEG F. The color is then analyzed by computer and the proportion of pigment for that batch is recorded as part of the serial number. The doors and front panels are then carefully color matched into perfectly matching sets.

Over the last 80 years Aga has built on that iconic design, creating new products for the day’s needs. Additions to the Aga family like dual fuel and electric cooking products, as well as refrigeration, have brought us a long way from Dalen’s first cooker in 1922, but close to our heritage.

MADISON, WI - MAY, 2001) - The game plan for the expansion of Sub-Zero into cooking appliances is well on track following its acquisition a year ago of Wolf Gourmet.
James Bakke, president of the 55-year-old manufacturer of the ultimate brand in refrigeration, said, "The transition has been exceedingly smooth, both from an operations perspective and also on a marketing level. The primary goal now is to inter-link the brands and their identities and communicate to the marketplace that ours is the ultimate family of kitchen appliances."

Most significant in the transition process has been the physical relocation of the Wolf manufacturing facilities. It was not simply a matter of moving from its former home in Compton, CA. Rather, it involved the construction of a completely new 300,000-square-foot factory plus office space here in Madison. Sub-Zero made the investment in the new production quarters, including the purchase of all-new machinery and tooling for the manufacturing of the Wolf appliances.
"We wanted to ensure the utmost in quality would be attained," said Bakke. "And, though it was a more costly way to consolidate the companies, it was, in our estimation, the best way to secure our future together."
According to Bakke, the transfer of all production was completed and operations were up and running at the end of January.
The next phase of development now underway on the 62-acre Sub-Zero/Wolf campus is construction of a 30,000-square-foot training and educational center. Not only will it be used for sales and installation training, but it also is envisioned to become a hub for a variety of programming, such as guest appearances and demonstrations by famous international culinary talents, wine and food tastings, and other special events for both professionals, as well as the general public.
One challenge still facing Sub-Zero as it completes the integration of Wolf into its family fold is how to raise consumer awareness for the Wolf brand to the same level of recognition Sub-Zero enjoys. To this end, one of the initial steps Sub-Zero has taken is to simplify the name from Wolf Gourmet to Wolf. A cleaner logo has been created, dropping the image of a wolf's head and adding a red flame to the W, to underscore that it is in the business of cooking.
"These are only a few of the basics we've begun to address in our marketing," explained Paul Leuthe, Sub-Zero's corporate marketing manager. "It is the outcome of extensive focus group research we conducted in major markets, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco."

Habersham Cabinetry
And it all started with old cigar boxes and discarded wooden spools. In early 1969, Habersham founder Joyce Eddy was a single mother struggling to support two young sons in the small North Georgia town of Clarkesville. After working as a clothing factory accountant for a few years, a family friend gave her the opportunity to operate a small antique shop located above an old laundromat.
Just as things began to look up for her family, Joyce experienced a series of setbacks. First, her antique shop caught fire and half of it was destroyed. Not one to give up easily, Joyce refurbished the shop only to have her own uninsured home catch fire and burn to the ground. Even though times were tough, Joyce's faith never faltered.
Looking for a way to make her antique business more profitable, Joyce soon began crafting small, decorative pocketbooks from vintage wooden cigar boxes. They were an instant hit with customers and Joyce decided to name her new venture Habersham Plantation after Georgia's Habersham County and the plantations for which the area was known.
Not much later, Joyce drove by a local textile company where she spotted a large pile of discarded wooden spools. Struck by an idea, she purchased them and set about crafting them into candleholders, towel racks and other practical folk art items. Like the cigar boxes, these delightful designs sold extremely well. With the help of her sons and other family members, Joyce soon expanded Habersham's offerings to include handcrafted furniture pieces reflecting the American Country design styles of the early 17th and 18th centuries.
Word of these unique furnishings spread quickly. To meet growing production demands without sacrificing her commitment to the handcrafted quality of original American Country furniture, she enlisted the help of individual woodworkers from her North Georgia region. Because the region had been a center for cabinetmaking since the early 1800s, the area's master craftsmen were quite familiar with the time-tested woodworking and joinery techniques Joyce demanded for her growing line. In fact, she even designed her factory to work just as the 18th century cabinetmakers did, with individual artisans hand-finishing, signing and dating each piece of furniture they crafted.
It wasn't long before Joyce began receiving national recognition. Her acclaimed designs appeared in leading magazines. Inquiries came in from across the country. And in 1984, President Reagan hosted Joyce when she was named Georgia's Small Business Person of the Year.

Now, as then, the Habersham name is synonymous with the fine art of furniture design. And over the years, the line has grown to include furniture, custom cabinetry and accent pieces in an array of rich, opulent finishes and delicate, hand-painted designs.
Yet despite its rapid growth, Habersham has never wavered from Joyce Eddy's core business philosophy – that the creation of fine furniture is a true art form demanding that each piece be individually crafted, painted and finished by hand.

Kitchen designed by Bob--Old Town Alexandria
This kitchen designed by Southern Kitchens, is in a 200 year old home in Old Town Alexandria. The client wanted the cabinetry to reflect the same personality and charm that the home has. They selected Mouser Custom Cabinetry with a custom beaded inset cherry door. A paint was chosen with a rub-thru finish to age the cabinet. The countertop is a Caesarstone quartz material in the Desert Limestone color with a honed finish.
The Pistachio AGA Six-Four range provides a great accent to the creamy cabinetry.
A Sub Zero refrigerator is hidden behind cabinetry panels. The appliance garage provides great storage.
A fireclay sink blends with the cabinetry color, while the Oil-Rubbed Bronze fixtures compliment the cabinetry hinges. The dishwasher handle doubles as a towel bar.

Kitchen designed by Bob--Fairfax Station area
The cabinetry selected for this kitchen renovation was Corsi Custom Cabinetry. The door style chosen was the Rutherford door style, a stunning wide rail, raised panel door in custom cream paint finish.
The mantel style hood stands proudly over a 48" Bertazzoni gas range.
Sub Zero 700 series refrigerators hidden cleverly in armoire style cabinetry to match the pantry cabinet next to it.

Bob also recently completed a kitchen in a condo unit in the Alexandria area. The client had chosen our Mouser Custom Cabinetry for her kitchen. She chose the Coventry door style, a beautiful raised panel door, in a China paint. The kitchen was completed with the Silestone Absolute Green.
She also selected this door style from Mouser Custom Cabinetry for her bathrooms, in the same China paint as the kitchen. In the master bathroom, we created a custom piece for linen storage. For the Powder Room, she chose the Cherry Hallmark stain.
This project was installed by WFB Company.

We recently completed a job in the Fairfax Station area of Virginia. The client selected our Medallion Cabinetry. The door style they chose is the Calistoga in the Vintage Morel finish, an elegant wide rail, raised panel door. The contractors who installed this kitchen were Doug and Mick Barham of Barham Construction.

Finding the KCMA ESP Green seal on Wellborn cabinets can give you great comfort in knowing that its impact on the environment during manufacturing has been checked end-to-end. The initial step in receiving certification examines procurement procedures in the raw product and continues through the manufacturing process. Manufacturers also receive credit by creating alternative energy using by-products, implementing an energy conservation program, and being involved in recycling programs.
WELLBORN’S NATURAL GAS SAVINGS = HEAT FOR 5,124 HOMES FOR ONE YEAR
Wellborn utilizes steam from the wood fired Co-Generation Plant in our Dry Kilns, Heating Ovens & Paint Room. This process saved 300,773 (MCF) thousand cubic feet of natural gas, a nonrenewable resource, in 2007, by using collected wood shavings.
EMISSIONS
Since 1995,Wellborn has reduced boiler air emissions 50% lower than required by state and EPA regulations through the installation of an Electrostatic Precipitation (ESP) Unit,“Best Available Control Technology.”
Lowering VOC Emissions
Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., is continuously working with our finish supplier,Valspar, Inc,. to reformulate our finishes and reduce their impact on the environment. In addition to this change, Wellborn has purchased another high-solid ultraviolet coating machine. This machine seals our products using 100% solid particles, further reducing volatile compounds.
Formaldehyde
Wellborn Cabinet, Inc., meets the KCMA ESP standards for formaldehyde emissions of our particleboard, MDF and plywood. These standards set by the Composite Panel Association Environmentally Preferable Product and ANSI/HPVA HP-1 are currently the most stringent of its kind concerning formaldehyde.
Transportation Fleet
Diesel emissions in our truck fleet have been reduced by the application of two new techniques. The newest tractors feature an Auxiliary Power Unit or APU. This feature eliminates unnecessary truck idling and, most importantly, lowers fuel usage and emissions. All new tractors are specked with these units. Secondly, drivers that do not have an APU will take advantage of IDLEAIRE, a great technology located at truck stops throughout the U.S. Drivers are encouraged to plan their stops at these locations where they can shut off their engines and hook up to a unit that provides heat, air and even T.V. and internet. By doing so, drivers are decreasing their impact on the environment.
Recycling
Wellborn environmental responsibility extends to the internal day-to-day activities of each employee. Office paper is collected throughout the plant to minimize land filling. Aluminum cans are collected from break areas to provide local recycling companies the opportunity to continuously process the usable aluminum. Ink and Toner cartridges are also gathered from units for recycling. Cardboard collection points throughout the facility allow for departments to bail used cardboard and send to a recycler. Also, a “Pop Tab” program is effective in providing for charities that use them for a great cause.
WOOD VS. OTHER MATERIALS
Wood is the most renewable resource we have. Of common building materials, wood uses the least energy to manufacture.Wood is energy conservative compared to the alternatives. Sub-Zero’s New Line of Built-In Refrigeration Helps Families Reduce Food Waste
New Web Site Provides Tips and Information for Keeping Food Fresher Longer
MADISON, Wis. (August 5, 2008) – Sub-Zero, Inc., the industry leader in premium refrigeration, has introduced a new Built-In Refrigeration Series that will help significantly reduce food waste and keep food fresher longer. The revamped line, available this fall, underscores Sub-Zero’s expertise and commitment to food preservation.
A recent study from the University of Arizona, along with internal research, suggests that the average U.S. household throws out well in excess of $500 worth of fruits, vegetables, leftovers and other food items every year due to spoilage. Much of this waste can be reduced by proper refrigeration, the reduction of ethylene gas in the refrigerator, and food storage education.
“With prices on the rise for so many food items at the supermarket, and as people make fewer visits to the store because of increased gas prices, it’s more important than ever before to keep food from spoiling in the refrigerator,” said Christopher Parr, consumer marketing manager for Sub-Zero, Inc. “Our new built-in refrigeration series includes several features to help combat this problem.”
Like all Sub-Zero refrigerators, the new built-in includes a freshness preservation system, which is a dual-compressor operating system that separately controls the temperature and humidity of the refrigerator and freezer compartments, and holds preset temperatures within a plus-or-minus one-degree. This precise, independent control of the refrigerator and freezer compartments ensures the highest air quality and therefore, fresh food and energy efficiency. Other refrigerators utilize just one compressor to push air from the freezer into the refrigerator, and this recycled air from the freezer compartment contributes to the drying and decay of fresh foods.
Sub-Zero’s new built-in series also includes an advanced air purification system that “scrubs” the entire volume of air in the refrigerator an average of once every 20 minutes. This purification system significantly reduces odors, viruses and bacteria – as well as the ethylene gases present in some foods that cause premature ripening and, ultimately, food spoilage. Some fresh foods, such as apples, naturally emit ethylene gas, which will make carrots in the refrigerator taste bitter and leafy vegetables decay faster.
Another feature of the built-in series is its new water filtration system. Sub-Zero created one of the most-advanced water filtration systems in the industry, designed to significantly reduce contaminants such as viruses and bacteria that may be present in water and ice. Most refrigeration water filters typically reduce chlorine and sediment, but Sub-Zero’s new design takes filtration a step further. The new microbiological water filter preserves the fresh taste of clean water and ice.
Proper food storage is also essential to ensure that foods stay as fresh as possible. Sub-Zero’s built-in units offer a freshness guide within the refrigerator that provides easy-access reference to proper storage for fruits, vegetables and leftovers. Advice featured on the card is based on research conducted by food scientists at the University of California, Davis. A second card offers important use-and-care information so owners can truly understand how to care for their food within the refrigerator.
“People often forget that certain foods shouldn’t be placed within proximity of each other in the refrigerator,” added Parr. “Our new freshness guide offers easy-to-understand tips and reminders that can make a big difference in keeping food fresh.”
These storage tips, along with guides on how to select high quality fruits and vegetables, and other helpful information are also featured on a recently launched Web site to support the launch of the Sub-Zero built-in series, http://www.subzerofresh.com. The site also gives users an expanded look at the refrigerator’s new features and allows virtual interaction with its capabilities.
“This built-in technology requires its own Web site to fully communicate its benefits and features,” said Parr. “The site brings to life the advancement of the refrigerator’s freshness preservation and examines the four distinct design options available to owners, to give them limitless flexibility.”
In addition to detailed information about the built-in series’ quality, design flexibility, performance, air purification and water filtration, the site also features a video gallery, photo gallery, customization options and a virtual tour of the different units (including detailed information on the 13 improvements in the interior alone, versus previous Sub-Zero models).
